World Country Upper Volta

About the world country Upper Volta, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Landlocked in Sahelian West Africa, north of the Ivory Coast and Ghana. Size: 105,869 sq. mi. (274,200 sq. km.). Population: 8,098,000.

Who Really Rules: In November, 1980, the 14-year rule of Gen. Aboubacar Sangoule Lamizana was ended by a bloodless military coup led by Col. Saye Zerbo. Parliament was dissolved and the three-year-old constitution was suspended.

Traditional tribal structures are still powerful in this subsistence-oriented country. Zerbo has the support of the labor movement and the Catholic Church as well as the leaders and royalty of the Mossi ethnic group, which makes up nearly 40% of the population. Lamizana's party was officially linked to the ruling party in the Ivory Coast, which exercises a great deal of influence over Upper Volta because the Ivory Coast is Upper Volta's major trading partner and employs 500,000 Voltan migrant workers each year.
