World Country Yugoslavia

About the world country Yugoslavia, its location, size, population, and who is in power.

Location: Adriatic coast of the Balkan Peninsula in southeastern Europe, bordered on the north by Austria and Hungary. Size: 98,766 sq. mi. (255,804 sq. km.). Population: 22,677,000.

Who Really Rules: Yugoslavia's central government, six republics, and two autonomous provinces are governed by the League of Communists of Yugoslavia (LCY). Although Yugoslavians enjoy substantial economic freedom and contact with Western Europe, the LCY monopolizes the government and harshly limits dissent. Since the death of President Josip Broz (Tito) in 1980, the government and party have been in the hands of a collective leadership representing Yugoslavia's eight major nationalities.

The Yugoslav economy is based upon decentralized, worker-controlled enterprises, with numerous joint ventures with Western capitalists. The relatively free market has encouraged large-scale consumption of consumer goods. Still, the Soviet Union is Yugoslavia's number-one trading partner.
